Introduction

This year, you will notice an overarching theme in our Sunday teachings as we focus on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in our modern society. What are the hallmarks of a Christian believer? What should we expect to encounter as we follow Christ in today’s world? All believers, at any stage of their journey, will face temptation. Why are we tempted, who tempts us, and how can we overcome it?

The Number One Weapon of the Devil

In the next three weeks, we will explore one of the primary weapons used by the enemy to distract us from obeying and trusting in God.

Why Do We Have to Experience Temptation?

Have you ever wondered why a person who believes in Jesus, is filled with the Holy Spirit, and actively lives for God can still face temptation—and even sometimes fall into its trap?

To answer this question, we need to understand the following points:

  1. God Does Not Tempt Anyone to Sin – (v. 13)
  2. The Source of Temptation – (v. 14-15)
  3. Temptation Can Develop Perseverance – (v. 12)

Discussion Questions

  1. How would you explain to a ten-year-old why someone might do something wrong or evil?
  2. How can you encourage someone who believes they cannot resist temptation because God made them the way they are?
  3. What is temptation? What purpose does it serve? How can someone endure it?
  4. How do we distinguish between temptation and testing, or are they the same thing?
  5. In the book of James, it is said that there is a progression from temptation to death. What are the steps (James 1:14-15)? What can you do to prevent an evil desire from becoming an evil act?
