Sermon notes

Introduction

Today, we celebrate and thank God for Eden and Cynthia as they are baptised. Baptism is deeply meaningful to Christians because it is both personal and genuine. It is a public declaration of the assurance that God loves us and sent His Son to give His life on the cross for our salvation. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, we receive the gift of eternal life, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are enabled to live with purpose and bear witness to the good news of Jesus each day.

What’s Next? — Do You Know the Cost of Discipleship? (Luke 14:25–32)

Application

Crowds followed Jesus because of His miracles, but He consistently taught that true discipleship comes at a cost. Following Christ requires commitment, devotion, and endurance. Have you considered what it means to live faithfully for Him in a world marked by sin?

Questions – Luke 14:25-35

  1. Why is counting the cost an important part of following Christ?
  2. Over the years, what sacrifices have you made that have helped you to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ? How difficult was it to make those sacrifices?
  3. How can we support one another in remaining faithful when discipleship becomes difficult?
  4. In what ways can a church drift into being a crowd of admirers rather than a community of disciples? See Luke 14:25-27.
  5. What does it mean to “give up everything” for Christ (v. 33)?
  6. Why do you think Jesus uses such strong language about “hating” family members and even one’s own life?
