Hebrews 11:32-40 (NIV-WS)
And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets ,…. quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign
armies….These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only
together with us would they be made perfect.
The one thing we all remember about Samson, is that he had super-human strength, the secret of which was his long hair!
Samson’s story is told between Chapters 13 and 16 of Judges and at the very beginning of his story we are told that Samson was chosen for his task before he was even born (Judges 13:1-5). So, before Samson was even born, God knew all about him, and in fact, already had a plan for his life. We see the same at the beginning of the book of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:5), and most importantly in the life of Jesus Christ (Luke 1:30-33).
God knew all about each of us before we were born. Not one of us was a mistake or took God by surprise. Although we don’t see faith much mentioned in the account of
Samson’s life in Judges, the writer of Hebrews makes it plain that Faith was central to all Samson did.
Hebrews 11:39 (NIV-WS)
…all commended for their faith…
It is through faith that we can, like Samson, take hold of the truth that God has a plan for your life!
It is through faith that we can, like Samson, take hold of the truth that God’s plan for our lives is not
dependant upon how ‘good’ a Christian we are!
It is through faith that we can, like Samson, take hold of the truth that God can turn all things to good in the lives of those of you who love him!
Our faith is in Jesus Christ. We are saved in Him. As we are told in Ephesians;
Ephesians 2:8-10 (NIV-WS)
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
It is through faith that we can, along with Samson and all the other heroes of faith, take hold of the truth that in Christ we are being made perfect and fit for His
service!
We, like Samson and all the heroes of old have been saved in order that we can do great things, and he has already given us the faith we need.
